Wedding Tips

PROS

  • Carefully consider your guest list. Not everyone can spare the time and expense to attend a long-distance wedding.

  • Civil ceremonies are fairly easy to arrange. Resort coordinators can help process paperwork.

  • Get married for less. The average American wedding costs $28,000 whereas a destination wedding can cost from $4,000 to $8,000 for 10 to 20 people, or $12,000 to $20,000 for 50. Plus, a troubled travel industry may mean discounts.

  • Internet research and destination-wedding coordinators greatly simplify the process. At Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, 7 out of 10 clients handle all the details via phone and e-mail with a coordinator, who offers a kind of one-stop shopping.

CONS

  • You may lose people you want, Older people, pregnant women and parents with young children are likely to drop out, along with those who can’t afford it.

  • Finding an officiant from your religious denomination can be difficult or impossible, depending on the location.

  • With a guest list smaller than that of a traditional wedding, you may get fewer gifts. Since people typically cover their own airfare and accommodations, they may spend less on a present.

  • Bridezillas, beware. Simple is often a by-product of fewer choices. Flowers on an island are typically whatever is in season. Food and beverages come from local vendors, so you may not find the mushroom canapés you had envisioned.
